Scarborough Castle to Cayton Bay

Phare The armed British collier Phare, ex Grovelea, ex Lady Furness, of 1282 tons gross was a Stephenson Clarke collier, torpedoed and sunk by German submarine on October 31 1917, with the loss of 14 lives. No positive location has been established for this wreck but an approximate position is given 54 19 00N 00 23 00W. Hydrographic reports at the time of loss give the position between 2.5 and 3 miles north of Scarborough, between and inside "can buoy 'C' and can buoy 'S'". These were the swept channel markers in position during the war, and anyone who has a wartime chart of the area could put it to good use! of the ship: Builders Blyth Ship Building Co, 1906. Engines: T.3cy 19,31 and 51. Boiler: 1SB 4CF. Dimensions of the ship: 234ft long by 34ft beam and there should be a defence gun to help identification.
