BUITENZORG

THE Buitenzorg is a 4520nt steel steamship built by Kon Maats de Schelde, Flushing, in 1916.
She was sailing down the Sound of Mull, with a general cargo, on passage from Dundee to Calcutta when she hit Eilen Rubha an Ridire, with the crew fortunately escaping before she went down.

It's thought she was trying to escape from U-boats further out to sea or mustering in the Lynn of Lorn to join a convoy before heading back out to the Atlantic.

She lies at 70-100 metres and out of reach of scuba equipment and there's thought to be around 300t of tin in cargo holds which hasn't been found.
