THESIS

THE Thesis is a 151nt motor vessel built by E J Smit, Westerbroek, in 1936.
She was enroute from Middlesbrough to Belfast with a cargo of pig-iron in October 1889 after a passage around the north of Scotland, through the Minch, then a turn into the Sound of Mull.

On a calm and apparently clear night she is thought to have hit the small island of Eilean Rubha an Ridire but luckily the crew got ashore as their vessel sank.
She lies on a steeply-sloping shore fifty metres from the rocky shoreline with the bow pointing shorewards at just over 20 meters, while the stern lies about 35 metres.

The wreck is basically just a hull with all the superstructure and decking gone and as The Sound of Mull is affected by strong currents around the Thesis, it is advisable to dive at slack water.
